The history of our region

As a small settlement, our heartland, Flensburg, was already making a name for itself in the 12th century. Its direct location on the water and its proximity to the important "Ochsenweg" trade route eventually led to traders settling here. However, the actual birth of the town did not take place until a little later - in 1284, to be precise: When Duke Waldemar IV of Schleswig granted Flensburg its town charter.

A lot has happened since then: the city was once part of Germany, then part of the Danish kingdom. The teacher training college became the European University and SG Flensburg-Handewitt became both German champions and Champions League winners.
