The history of Flensburg

As a small settlement, Flensburg already made a name for itself in the 12th century. The direct location on the water and the proximity to the important trade route "Ochsenweg" eventually led to traders settling here. But the actual birth of the town took place a little later - in 1284, to be exact: When Duke Waldemar IV of Schleswig granted Flensburg town charter.

Since then, a lot has happened: the city sometimes belonged to Germany, sometimes it was part of the Danish kingdom. The College of Education became the European University and the SG Flensburg-Handewitt became both German champion and Champions League winner. You can find a detailed overview of Flensburg's city history here.

Also, a tip: The city archive in Flensburg's city hall is a veritable treasure trove for those interested in history or those who simply want to learn more about Flensburg's eventful past. You are cordially invited to drop by and browse through the historical documents, newspapers and photos.
